About this calculator

Shift differential pay is extra compensation added on top of a base hourly rate for working less desirable shifts, typically nights, evenings, or weekends. It's calculated as extra pay = base rate × differential percentage × hours worked on that shift, then added to the regular pay for those hours to get the total pay for the shift.

HR departments and payroll managers set and apply differential rates to compensate for the disruption of non-standard hours, and the calculation is used heavily in industries that run around the clock — hospitals, manufacturing plants, call centers and hospitality — where night, weekend or holiday shift workers need to see exactly how much extra their schedule earns them over a standard daytime rate.
