About this calculator

Shipping markup is the extra amount a seller adds on top of the actual carrier cost before charging the customer for shipping, calculated as customer charge = actual shipping cost × (1 + markup%). A $6 actual cost with a 25% markup becomes a $7.50 charge to the customer.

Shipping rarely maps one-to-one onto what carriers actually charge — packaging materials, box-handling labor, and the risk of underestimating a package’s size or weight all cost money that a flat pass-through of the carrier rate doesn’t cover — so many sellers build a markup into their shipping charge much like they would into product price. E-commerce sellers on platforms like Etsy and Shopify, and small-business owners quoting shipping manually, use this calculation to make sure their shipping charge covers true fulfillment costs rather than eating into product margin.
