About this calculator
The Sinclair coefficient, published annually by the International Weightlifting Federation, lets Olympic weightlifting results be compared fairly across different bodyweight categories — since heavier lifters can move more absolute weight, a raw kilogram comparison would always favor the superheavyweights. The coefficient is calculated as 10^(A × (log₁₀(x/b))²) for a lifter of bodyweight x below a reference bodyweight b (the bodyweight of the heaviest lifter in that sex’s class in recent world-record history), where A is a constant fit from historical data; lifters at or above b get a coefficient of 1.
Multiplying a lifter’s total (snatch + clean and jerk) by their Sinclair coefficient gives the Sinclair total — a bodyweight-adjusted score used to determine “best lifter” awards at competitions spanning multiple weight classes, since it puts a 55 kg lifter and a 110 kg lifter on the same comparative scale. This calculator takes bodyweight, total lifted, and sex to return your coefficient and Sinclair total.
