About this calculator

The Durnin-Womersley equation, published in 1974, estimates body fat percentage from the sum of four skinfold measurements — biceps, triceps, subscapular, and suprailiac — taken with skinfold calipers at standardized sites. The method first calculates body density from the log of the summed skinfolds using age- and sex-specific regression coefficients, then converts that density to body fat percentage using the Siri equation (%BF = (495 ÷ density) − 450), one of the most widely validated body-composition conversion formulas.

The Durnin-Womersley 4-site protocol is one of the most commonly used skinfold methods in exercise physiology and clinical nutrition research because it requires fewer measurement sites than 7-site protocols while still correlating well with underwater weighing (hydrostatic densitometry), the gold-standard reference method it was validated against.

This calculator takes your 4-site skinfold sum, age, and sex, and returns your estimated body fat percentage using the Durnin-Womersley equation and Siri conversion.
