About this calculator

Sleep and exercise physiology research shows that harder or longer training sessions increase the body's recovery demand, and one practical way to account for that is to add a recovery increment on top of a person's normal baseline sleep need, scaled to the day's training duration and intensity — more time and higher intensity add more minutes of recommended sleep, since deep sleep is when most muscle repair and growth-hormone release occurs.

This calculator takes your baseline sleep need and the day's training load and returns an adjusted sleep target. Athletes and endurance trainees use it to justify prioritizing an earlier bedtime after a hard session, and coaches and sports scientists use the same logic when programming a training block, treating sleep as an adjustable recovery variable alongside rest days and nutrition rather than a fixed 7-9 hours for everyone.
