About this calculator

This calculator converts rise and run (vertical change over horizontal distance) into both a slope percentage (rise/run × 100) and an angle in degrees (arctan(rise/run)) — two different ways of describing the same incline that aren't proportional to each other (a 100% slope is a 45° angle, not 100°).

Road and trail signage uses percentage grade (a "10% grade" warning sign), while construction and engineering drawings more often specify angle in degrees, so contractors building a wheelchair ramp (which must meet a maximum percentage grade under accessibility codes), hikers reading a trail's elevation profile, and roofers calculating a roof pitch all need to convert between the two.
