About this calculator

Speed and pace are inverse ways of describing the same motion: speed measures distance covered per unit of time (km/h), while pace measures time needed per unit of distance (minutes per kilometer or per mile). Converting between them is a simple reciprocal relationship: pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ speed (km/h), so a treadmill speed of 12 km/h corresponds to a pace of exactly 5:00 per kilometer.

Runners think in pace during a race — checking a watch mid-run to see if they’re holding, say, a 5:30/km pace — but treadmills and cycling computers almost always display speed instead, which is why this conversion comes up constantly when translating a treadmill setting into a race-pace target, or when comparing a GPS watch’s speed readout against a known goal pace for an upcoming 10K or marathon. Coaches also use it to convert lab-tested speed thresholds (like the speed at lactate threshold) into the pace language runners actually train and race by.

Enter your speed in km/h, and this calculator converts it to pace per kilometer and per mile instantly.
