About this calculator

The calculation multiplies the surface area by the number of coats needed, then divides by the coverage per can stated on the label (typical aerosol cans cover roughly 25–35 sq ft, or 2–3 m², per coat at normal application distance) to get the number of cans, usually rounded up since partial cans can't be bought. Coverage drops noticeably on porous or textured surfaces and rises on smooth, primed ones, which is why the calculator treats coverage-per-can as an adjustable input rather than a fixed constant.

DIYers repainting furniture, auto-body hobbyists doing panel touch-ups, and crafters spray-painting multiple small items all use this to avoid the common mistake of running out mid-coat, which leaves visible lines where a fresh can's spray pattern doesn't quite match the old one. Buying the right number of cans up front also keeps color batches consistent, since aerosol paint can vary slightly between production lots.
