About this calculator

Surface tension is the tendency of a liquid's surface to act like a stretched elastic membrane, caused by cohesive forces between molecules at the interface. When a wire or ring is pulled out of a liquid film — as in the classic wire-frame demonstration — the film has two surfaces (front and back), so the force required is F = 2·γ·L, where γ is the liquid's surface tension coefficient and L is the length of contact. This calculator solves that relationship directly from the coefficient and wetted length.

The formula is a staple of introductory fluid mechanics and physics laboratory courses, where students measure surface tension using a Wilhelmy plate or du Noüy ring apparatus that directly applies this equation.
