The age-based expected systolic blood pressure is a rough rule-of-thumb clinicians have long used as a quick benchmark — distinct from, and less precise than, the clinical hypertension thresholds set out in guidelines like the 120/80 standard used for actual diagnosis.

It’s used as a quick point of reference by people tracking home blood pressure readings or checking in on general wellness, but real clinical targets are set individually by a physician, taking into account risk factors such as diabetes or kidney disease that a simple age formula can’t account for.
