About this calculator
A tax refund happens when the tax withheld from your paychecks (or paid in estimated installments) during the year turns out to be more than your actual tax liability once your return is filed — the government simply returns the overpayment. If withholding falls short of what you owe, you get a balance due instead. Liability itself is calculated with progressive tax brackets, where each additional slice of taxable income is taxed at that bracket's marginal rate rather than your whole income being taxed at one flat rate.
This estimator compares your total withholding against your estimated tax owed to project whether you're headed for a refund or a bill, and by roughly how much. It's a planning tool used by employees and freelancers alike to decide whether to adjust their W-4 withholding or estimated payments mid-year, so the surprise at filing time is smaller. Because bracket thresholds, standard deductions, and credit amounts are updated periodically, treat the result as a directional estimate rather than a final filing figure.
