About this calculator

This calculator solves the thin lens equation, 1/f = 1/dₒ + 1/dᵢ, for image distance given a focal length and object distance, and also computes magnification as −dᵢ/dₒ, telling you whether the resulting image is enlarged, reduced, upright or inverted.

It's used in optics coursework, and by photographers and camera designers reasoning about focal length, lens focus distance and image size, as well as anyone working through problems involving magnifying glasses, projectors or simple telescopes.
