About this calculator

To find how long it takes an investment to reach a target value, this calculator rearranges the compound interest formula FV = PV × (1 + r)ⁿ to solve for time: n = ln(FV ÷ PV) ÷ ln(1 + r), where FV is the goal amount, PV is the starting balance, and r is the periodic (usually annual) rate of return.

Individual investors and financial planners use this to answer questions like "how many years until my savings double" or "when will this account reach $1 million" at an assumed rate of return, which helps set realistic retirement or savings timelines. Because it isolates time as the unknown, it's especially useful for comparing how a higher expected return or a larger starting balance shortens the path to a fixed goal.
