This tool looks up the city, state and county tied to any five-digit US ZIP code, the postal routing system the United States Postal Service introduced in 1963 (and later extended with the ZIP+4 add-on for finer sorting). ZIP codes don't map neatly onto political boundaries — they were designed around mail-delivery routes, so a single code can span parts of a city or even cross a state line in rare cases, which is why a direct lookup is more reliable than guessing from a map.
