About this calculator

When an infusion pump is not available, IV drip rate is set manually by counting drops per minute: drip rate = volume in mL multiplied by the giving set’s drop factor, divided by the infusion time in minutes. The drop factor — how many drops make up 1 mL — depends on the tubing: macrodrip sets are commonly 10, 15 or 20 gtt/mL, while microdrip sets used for small or fragile patients are standardized at 60 gtt/mL.

Veterinary technicians rely on this calculation constantly when running fluids on dogs, cats and other patients under anesthesia or dehydration treatment, since delivering fluid too fast can overload the circulation while too slow undertreats shock or dehydration — and the right drop factor must match whatever giving set is actually on the bag.

This calculator takes your target volume, infusion time and drop factor, and returns the drops-per-minute rate to count at the drip chamber.
