About this calculator
This calculator divides your room's floor area by the coverage a single box of vinyl plank flooring provides (printed on the box, commonly 20–30 sq ft per box depending on brand and plank size), then adds a waste allowance — typically 5–10% for a straight layout, up from there for diagonal installs or rooms with lots of cuts around cabinets and doorways — before rounding up to a whole number of boxes, since a partial box can't be purchased.
DIY homeowners and flooring installers use this before placing an order because underestimating means an expensive, sometimes impossible mid-project run back to the store to match a dye lot that may already be discontinued, while overestimating wastes money on unopened boxes. Getting the waste percentage right for the specific room layout — a simple rectangular room needs far less allowance than one with bay windows, closets, or a herringbone pattern — is what separates a good estimate from a rough guess.
