About this calculator

The 216-color web-safe palette dates back to the era of 256-color displays: it restricts each RGB channel to just six values — 0, 51, 102, 153, 204 and 255 — spaced evenly so that every combination renders identically across old 8-bit graphics cards and operating systems without dithering or color shifts.

This tool rounds each channel of any hex color to the nearest of those six values and returns the resulting web-safe hex code. While modern displays render millions of colors reliably, the palette is still referenced by designers working on retro or pixel-art aesthetics, in email and legacy system design where rendering consistency across old clients matters, and in design education explaining how color constraints shaped early web development.
