About this calculator

Planning wedding seating starts with a simple division problem: guest count divided by seats per table, rounded up to the next whole table, since you can't book a fraction of a table. This calculator also reports the resulting total capacity (tables × seats per table) and the number of empty seats left over once every guest has a place — the gap between capacity and headcount.

That empty-seat count matters beyond arithmetic: caterers and venues often price per place setting or per table regardless of whether every seat is filled, so knowing exactly how many empty seats a given table count creates helps couples decide whether to consolidate to fewer, fuller tables, add a sweetheart or kids' table, or simply budget for the unavoidable overage.
