About this calculator
A headwind slows a runner down more than an equal-speed tailwind speeds them up, because aerodynamic drag increases with the square of the air velocity relative to the runner — running into the wind adds your own speed to the wind's speed when calculating that relative velocity, while running with the wind subtracts it, so the physics are inherently asymmetric in the wind's favor when it's against you. That asymmetry is why a windy out-and-back course, or any race with sustained crosswind or headwind sections, produces a net-slower time than running the same distance in calm conditions.
Runners use a wind-adjusted pace figure to know what clock pace actually matches their intended effort level once wind enters the equation — useful for pacing a windy race realistically, deciding how much to draft or tuck in behind other runners into a headwind, and not panicking over a slower-than-goal split that's actually just the wind, not lost fitness.
This calculator takes your target pace and the wind speed and direction, and returns the adjusted pace you should expect to run for the same effort under those wind conditions.
