About this calculator

This calculator finds the alcohol by volume (ABV) of home-brewed beer or wine from the original gravity (OG) and final gravity (FG) readings taken with a hydrometer, using the standard formula ABV = (OG − FG) × 131.25 (or the more precise variant for higher-gravity brews). It also reports apparent attenuation, the percentage of sugars converted to alcohol.

Homebrewers and winemakers take these gravity readings before and after fermentation to confirm fermentation finished and to know the strength of the finished batch for labeling or recipe adjustment. Enter your OG and FG to get the ABV and attenuation percentage.
