About this calculator

Average velocity is a vector quantity defined as total displacement divided by total time, v = displacement / time — distinct from average speed, which uses total distance traveled and is always equal to or greater than the magnitude of average velocity whenever the path isn't a straight line in one direction.

This distinction matters in kinematics problems throughout physics education and in real-world applications like GPS-based trip analysis, where a car that drives a winding 50 km route but ends up only 20 km from its start has covered 50 km of distance but only 20 km of net displacement, giving two very different numbers depending on which one is asked for.

Physics students working through one-dimensional and vector kinematics, driving and delivery route planners estimating trip times, and coaches analyzing athletes' straight-line performance all use this formula, converting between m/s and km/h depending on the context.
