About this calculator

Sprint speed is simply distance divided by time, but converting a raw split time into a comparable speed figure — meters per second, kilometers per hour, or miles per hour — is what makes a stopwatch reading useful for comparison. Elite male sprinters average around 10 to 10.5 m/s over 100 meters, with peak instantaneous speed reaching roughly 12 to 12.4 m/s (Usain Bolt's world-record run hit an estimated 12.4 m/s at its fastest point), which gives a frame of reference for interpreting a measured time.

Track and field coaches use average sprint speed calculated this way to compare athletes across different distances, strength and conditioning coaches use it to benchmark a 40-yard dash or flying-sprint test, and sports scientists use it as one input into broader speed and acceleration profiling.

This calculator takes a distance and a time and returns the average speed in meters per second, kilometers per hour, and miles per hour.
