About this calculator

This tool converts text into its 8-bit binary representation, where each character is translated into its ASCII (or Unicode byte) code and written out as a string of eight 0s and 1s, or reverses the process by decoding a binary string back into readable characters. Every printable character has a fixed underlying numeric code, and binary is simply that number written in base 2.

It is used mainly for educational purposes, helping students and beginners in computer science see concretely how computers store and represent text as sequences of bits rather than as letters, since this abstraction is often taught conceptually but rarely shown worked out for real words. It also comes up in puzzle-solving, CTF (capture-the-flag) challenges, and hobbyist projects where a message has been hidden or encoded as binary and needs to be read back as plain text.
