About this calculator

Like other cardio machines, calorie burn on an elliptical trainer is estimated with the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method: calories = MET value × body weight in kg × time in hours. Elliptical MET values typically range from around 5.0 for a light, low-resistance pace up to 9.0 or higher for a vigorous session with high resistance and incline, so intensity and resistance settings matter as much as duration for total calorie burn.

The elliptical’s appeal is its low-impact motion — the feet never leave the pedals, so there’s no landing shock — which is why physical therapists and trainers frequently recommend it for clients recovering from joint injuries, managing arthritis, or returning to cardio after a lower-body injury, in contrast to running or jump rope. Because many elliptical consoles overestimate calorie burn by default, gym-goers use an independent MET-based calculator like this one to get a more realistic figure.

Enter your weight, session duration, and intensity level, and this calculator estimates the calories burned on the elliptical.
