About this calculator

The Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU (CAM-ICU) is a validated bedside delirium screening tool built around four features: (1) acute onset or fluctuating course of mental status, (2) inattention (tested with tasks like squeezing on the letter A), (3) altered level of consciousness (any RASS score other than 0), and (4) disorganized thinking. A patient screens positive for delirium only when both features 1 and 2 are present, plus either feature 3 or feature 4.

This tool takes your assessment of each of the four features and applies that logic to interpret the screen automatically. ICU nurses and critical care physicians use CAM-ICU as part of routine rounds because delirium in ventilated or sedated patients is common, easy to miss without a structured tool, and independently associated with longer ICU stays and worse outcomes.
