About this calculator

The mid-parental height method predicts a child's expected adult height from both parents' heights: for boys, (father's height + mother's height + 13 cm) ÷ 2, and for girls, (father's height + mother's height − 13 cm) ÷ 2, with the 13 cm adjustment accounting for the average height difference between adult men and women. This formula, sometimes called the Tanner method, gives an estimate with a typical margin of error of roughly ±8-9 cm, reflecting the substantial (but not total) role genetics plays in adult height.

Pediatricians and pediatric endocrinologists use mid-parental height as a baseline reference — a child's target height range — when plotting growth on a pediatric growth chart, since a child growing steadily along a percentile consistent with their genetic target is generally reassuring, while significant deviation from it can prompt further evaluation for growth hormone deficiency or other endocrine conditions. Parents also use it informally out of simple curiosity about how tall their child might eventually be.
