About this calculator
A rewards credit card earns cash back, points, or miles at a set rewards rate on purchases, but many rewards cards — especially premium travel cards — also charge an annual fee. The net value of holding the card is simply what you earn in rewards over a year minus that annual fee, and it is the number that actually determines whether the card is worth carrying.
A card advertising a high rewards rate can still be a poor deal if annual spending is too low to offset a steep annual fee, while a modest rewards rate on a no-fee card can outperform a flashier card for someone who does not spend enough to make the fee back. This calculator takes annual spend, rewards rate, and annual fee to show the net rewards value in dollar terms, making it easy to compare cards on an apples-to-apples basis.
