About this calculator

In his book Deep Work, computer scientist Cal Newport argues that the ability to focus without distraction on cognitively demanding tasks is becoming both rarer and more valuable, and that most knowledge workers overestimate how many hours of it they actually produce in a week. Meetings, email, context-switching and administrative overhead eat into the raw hours on a calendar long before any deep thinking starts, and the work that remains is rarely performed at full mental efficiency.

This calculator starts from your total weekly working hours, subtracts time already committed to meetings and admin, and then applies a focus-efficiency factor to approximate how much of what is left is genuinely deep — the kind of single-task, low-interruption effort that produces writing, code, strategy and analysis rather than just activity. The result is a more honest weekly deep-work budget than “hours at my desk,” and a number worth tracking the same way athletes track training load.
