About this calculator

An electric vehicle's efficiency is typically rated in kWh per 100 miles (or the inverse, miles per kWh), and converting that into a cost figure is straightforward: cost per mile = (kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100) × price per kWh. A car rated at 30 kWh/100mi charging at $0.15/kWh, for example, costs about $0.045 per mile — dramatically less than the per-mile fuel cost of an equivalent gas car, which is exactly the comparison most EV owners want to see.

This figure varies significantly with where and how you charge — home charging on a residential electricity rate is usually far cheaper than public DC fast-charging, which often carries a premium price per kWh — so EV owners use cost-per-mile calculations to budget realistically, compare charging locations, and directly weigh an EV's running cost against a gas vehicle's cost per mile (fuel price divided by MPG) when deciding whether to switch. Fleet managers evaluating EV conversion for delivery vehicles or rideshare fleets rely on the same math at scale to estimate total operating cost savings.

This calculator takes your EV's kWh per 100 miles and your electricity price and returns your estimated cost per mile.
