About this calculator
An electric vehicle’s running cost per mile is driven by two numbers: its energy consumption rate, usually rated in kilowatt-hours per 100 miles (the inverse of the EPA’s MPGe efficiency figure), and the price you pay per kilowatt-hour of electricity. Multiplying those together and dividing by 100 gives the cost of a single mile, which this calculator also scales up to a cost per 100 miles for easier comparison against a gas car’s cost-per-mile figure.
EV owners and shoppers use this math to budget charging costs, especially since electricity rates vary widely by time of day, utility, and whether charging happens at home or at a public DC fast charger, and fleet managers use the same calculation across many vehicles to estimate total cost of ownership versus gasoline or diesel equivalents.
Enter your vehicle’s consumption rating and your electricity price per kWh to see the per-mile and per-100-mile cost, which you can compare directly against what a comparable gas vehicle would cost to drive the same distance.
