About this calculator

The Framingham general cardiovascular risk model estimates 10-year probability of a heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular event from a set of measurable risk factors — age, sex, total and HDL cholesterol, systolic blood pressure (and whether it’s treated with medication), smoking status and diabetes status — weighted according to associations first established in the long-running Framingham Heart Study cohort begun in 1948.

Primary-care physicians and cardiologists use Framingham-style risk scores to decide who benefits from statin therapy, blood-pressure treatment, or more aggressive lifestyle intervention, since guideline thresholds for starting preventive medication are typically defined in terms of 10-year risk percentage rather than any single risk factor in isolation. It remains one of the most widely referenced risk models, even as newer cohort-specific tools (like the pooled cohort equations) have been developed for particular populations.

This calculator takes your age, sex, cholesterol values, blood pressure, smoking and diabetes status and returns your estimated 10-year cardiovascular risk using the Framingham general risk model.
