About this calculator

Cost per mile is simply the price of fuel per gallon (or liter) divided by your vehicle's fuel economy in miles per gallon: cost per mile = price per gallon ÷ MPG. A car getting 30 MPG at $3.60 per gallon costs 12 cents per mile in fuel alone, while a truck getting 15 MPG at the same price costs 24 cents per mile — showing directly how efficiency and fuel price combine into a single, comparable number.

This per-mile figure is what fleet managers use to compare operating costs across different vehicles and set mileage reimbursement rates, what rideshare and delivery drivers use to know their real margin after fuel on every trip, and what everyday drivers use to fairly compare the running cost of a fuel-efficient car against a larger vehicle before a purchase, or to budget for a long road trip by multiplying the per-mile rate by planned distance.

This calculator takes your vehicle's MPG and current fuel price to give you an exact cost per mile, so you can compare vehicles or estimate trip costs without doing the division by hand.
