About this calculator

The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) is a standardized clinical scale used in rehabilitation medicine to track how independently a patient can perform daily activities. It scores 18 items on a 1-to-7 scale, split into a motor subscore (13 items, range 13–91, covering self-care, sphincter control, transfers, and locomotion) and a cognitive subscore (5 items, range 5–35, covering communication and social cognition).

This calculator adds the two subscores to give the total FIM score (18–126) and maps it to a general dependence level, from total assistance at the low end to complete independence at 126. It's used by physical therapists, occupational therapists, and rehab teams to document progress after stroke, spinal cord injury, or major surgery, and to compare function at admission versus discharge.
