About this calculator

Grass plugs are small, rooted sections of turfgrass planted in a grid across bare or thin soil to establish a new lawn without full sodding or seeding — common with warm-season grasses like zoysia, St. Augustine and bermuda that spread by runners and fill in the gaps between plugs over time. The number needed follows directly from geometry: plugs = lawn area ÷ (spacing in inches ÷ 12)², since each plug effectively “owns” a square of that spacing on a side. This calculator runs that formula for your area and chosen spacing.

The tool is aimed at homeowners and landscaping contractors planning a lawn renovation, since plug spacing is a real cost-versus-speed tradeoff: tighter spacing (like 6 inches) fills in faster but needs far more plugs and money than wider spacing (like 12 inches), which is cheaper but leaves the lawn patchy for longer while the grass spreads. Getting the plug count right before ordering avoids both running short mid-project and over-ordering material that won't get used.
