About this calculator

This calculator translates a raw workload into a staffing number: total required hours divided by the productive hours per employee — the realistic hours someone actually works once breaks, meetings, training and absence are accounted for — then rounded up, since you can't hire a fraction of a person.

It gives both the exact full-time-equivalent (FTE) figure, useful for budgeting and comparing to part-time or contractor mixes, and the whole number of people to actually hire. Operations managers and workforce planners use this kind of calculation routinely when scaling a call center, warehouse or production line to a known demand.
