About this calculator

RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) autoregulated training ties the weight on the bar to how hard a set actually feels rather than a fixed percentage of your one-rep max, using an RPE scale (popularized in powerlifting by Mike Tuchscherer) where RPE 10 means no reps left in the tank and RPE 8 means about two reps left. To turn a target reps-and-RPE combination into an actual working weight, the calculation first estimates your 1RM from a known lift using a formula like Epley's (1RM = weight × (1 + reps/30)), then looks up the percentage of 1RM that corresponds to the target rep count at the target RPE.

Powerlifters and strength coaches use RPE-based load prescriptions because they adjust automatically for daily readiness — a lifter having an off day naturally ends up with a lighter prescribed weight for the same RPE and rep target, without needing to reprogram the whole training block. It's a core tool in modern autoregulated periodization, used alongside or instead of straight percentage-based programming.
