About this calculator

This calculator finds an image's megapixel count as width × height (in pixels) divided by one million — the standard unit camera and phone specs are marketed in. More megapixels mean more detail captured and more room to crop without losing sharpness or to print at a larger size, but megapixel count alone doesn't determine image quality: sensor size, lens quality, and pixel size all affect how much real detail and low-light performance a given megapixel count actually delivers.

Photographers and videographers use it to compare cameras beyond the marketing spec sheet and to check whether a sensor's resolution suits their intended print or crop needs; everyday consumers use it when comparing phone or camera specs before a purchase; and print shops use it to verify that a submitted image has enough resolution for the requested print size. Enter the pixel width and height to get the megapixel count.
