About this calculator

An image's printed size depends on the relationship between its pixel dimensions and the printing resolution: print size (inches) = pixel dimension ÷ DPI (dots per inch). A 3000×2000 pixel photo printed at 300 DPI — the standard for sharp photo prints viewed up close — comes out to 10×6.67 inches, but the same file printed at 150 DPI stretches to 20×13.3 inches, covering more area with the same pixels spread thinner, which is why low-DPI enlargements look soft or pixelated up close even though nothing was lost from the file.

Photographers and print shops use this calculation to confirm a file has enough resolution before committing to a print size — sending a phone screenshot to be printed poster-size without checking DPI is a common and costly mistake — and graphic designers use it when preparing files for magazines, packaging or signage, where the required DPI varies by viewing distance (300 DPI for close-up prints, but billboards viewed from a distance can use far lower DPI and still look sharp).
