About this calculator

Running pace per kilometer expresses how long it takes to cover one kilometer, given as minutes and seconds (min:sec/km), and is calculated simply as total time divided by total distance in kilometers. It is the direct inverse of speed: dividing distance by time gives km/h, while dividing time by distance gives pace, and the two are just different ways of describing the same effort.

Runners and coaches use pace almost universally for training and racing because it is easier to reason about mid-run than raw speed — a target of '5:00/km' for a tempo run is more intuitive to hold than '12 km/h'. Pace per kilometer also underlies race-time predictions, splits pacing strategy for marathons and half-marathons, and GPS watch training zones, where zones are often defined in pace bands rather than speed.

This calculator converts a run time and distance into both pace per kilometer and speed in km/h, so you can plan splits or compare effort across runs of different distances.
