About this calculator

Lactation guidance commonly targets a total daily breast milk intake of roughly 150 mL per kilogram of body weight per day (about 2.5 oz per pound) for a fully breastfed or exclusively pumped baby once feeding is well established, typically past the first few weeks. Dividing that daily target by the number of pumping sessions per day gives a target volume per session, which is the number most exclusively pumping mothers actually track.

This calculator takes a baby's weight and the number of daily pumping sessions and returns the target daily volume and the volume needed per session. Lactation consultants and NICU/postpartum nurses use this benchmark to reassure or flag parents about milk supply, and exclusively pumping mothers use it to set a realistic daily and per-session goal rather than comparing themselves to arbitrary numbers found online.
