About this calculator
Relative peak power divides an athlete’s peak power output — measured in watts, typically from a force plate, cycling power meter, or Wingate anaerobic test — by their body weight in kilograms, giving a watts-per-kilogram (W/kg) figure that lets you compare explosive power output between athletes of different sizes, since raw watts alone favor heavier athletes.
Strength and conditioning coaches use W/kg from vertical jump or sprint testing to track an athlete’s power development relative to their own bodyweight over a training cycle, and it’s a standard metric in cycling, where sprint and short-effort power-to-weight ratios help predict performance on climbs and in sprints far better than absolute watts do. Sports scientists reference published W/kg benchmarks to compare athletes against normative data for their sport and level.
This calculator takes your peak power output and body weight and returns your relative power in watts per kilogram.
