About this calculator
Watts per kilogram (W/kg) normalizes power output by body weight so riders of different sizes can be compared on climbing and sustained-effort ability, and Andrew Coggan's power profile chart maps W/kg at standard durations — 5 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes and 20 minutes (used as a functional threshold power proxy) — onto categories from untrained through Category 5 up to World Class, separately for men and women because of physiological differences in typical power-to-weight ratios.
Competitive cyclists, coaches and racing categorization systems use W/kg profiling to benchmark a rider's strength across different effort durations rather than just one number, since a rider strong in short sprints may be weak over 20-minute efforts or vice versa, and racing categories are often set with reference to where a rider's sustained W/kg lands on this chart. Knowing the wattage gap to the next category also turns an abstract classification into a concrete training target.
This calculator takes your power output, body weight, effort duration and sex, and returns your W/kg, your Coggan power-profile category, and the watts you'd need to add to reach the next level.
