About this calculator
This tool converts an Arabic (standard) number between 1 and 3999 into Roman numerals, the numeral system used in ancient Rome that represents values using combinations of seven letters: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500) and M (1000). Numbers are built by combining symbols additively (VI = 6) and, following the standard subtractive notation, by placing a smaller value before a larger one to subtract it (IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, CM = 900) — this convention is why 1994 is written MCMXCIV rather than the older, purely additive form.
Roman numerals are no longer used for everyday arithmetic but remain common in specific contexts: clock and watch faces, chapter and volume numbering in books, movie sequel titles and copyright years in film credits, monarch and pope names (Elizabeth II, John Paul II), the Super Bowl, and outline/document numbering. Students learning the system, writers formatting a manuscript, and designers laying out a clock face all use converters like this to move between Arabic and Roman notation accurately.
