About this calculator

A Roth IRA is a US retirement account funded with after-tax contributions, whose investment growth and qualified withdrawals in retirement are entirely tax-free — the opposite of a traditional IRA, where contributions are pre-tax but withdrawals are taxed. This calculator projects the future balance by compounding your current balance plus a stream of annual contributions at an assumed annual return over your chosen number of years until retirement.

Because the account grows tax-free rather than merely tax-deferred, starting contributions early and staying consistent has an outsized effect on the final balance — decades of compounding on money that will never be taxed again. This calculator takes your current balance, annual contribution, expected annual return, and years to retirement and returns the projected future balance.
