About this calculator

Calories burned on a rowing ergometer are estimated from your average power output in watts, since the machine’s performance monitor calculates watts directly from how hard and fast you pull the handle. A common approximation is calories burned per hour is roughly watts x 3.6 (converting mechanical work to metabolic energy expenditure, accounting for the body’s efficiency), scaled by your rowing time.

Indoor rowers and Concept2 users lean on watts rather than heart rate for calorie estimates because power output is a direct, real-time measure of work done, unlike heart rate which lags and is affected by factors like caffeine, stress and heat. It’s the basis for the calorie count shown on most rowing machine displays, and coaches use watt-based pacing to structure interval and steady-state pieces during training.

This calculator takes your average power output in watts and your rowing time and estimates the calories burned during that session.
