About this calculator

Sell-through rate (STR) measures how much of the inventory a retailer received actually sold within a period, calculated as units sold ÷ units received × 100, leaving units received − units sold as the remaining unsold stock. A rate of 80% within the first month, for instance, is a commonly cited benchmark for strong-selling apparel.

STR reveals whether a product is moving fast enough to justify shelf space and a reorder, or sitting slowly enough that it needs a markdown, promotion, or discontinuation before it ties up more capital in unsold stock — raw units-sold numbers alone don’t show this because they ignore how much was stocked in the first place. Retail buyers, merchandisers and inventory planners track sell-through rate by SKU or category to guide reordering, markdown timing, and future purchasing decisions.
