About this calculator

The converter takes a whole number and renders it as tally marks: single strokes for the first four units in a group, then a fifth diagonal stroke crossing the previous four to mark a complete group of five, repeating for however many groups the number requires. Seventeen, for example, becomes three crossed groups of five plus two single strokes.

Teachers and early-elementary students use tally marks to practice counting in groups and reinforce the concept that numbers can be grouped and skip-counted, and they remain a handy manual method for anyone tallying votes, survey responses, or event occurrences on paper without a running total in view.
