About this calculator

The Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, introduced by Podsiadlo and Richardson in 1991, is a simple mobility screen used by physical therapists and geriatricians: the patient rises from a standard chair, walks 3 metres, turns, walks back, and sits down again, while an examiner times the whole sequence with a stopwatch. It requires no special equipment and takes under a minute, which is why it is one of the most widely used fall-risk screens in geriatric and rehabilitation practice.

Published cutoffs generally treat under 10 seconds as normal mobility for healthy older adults, 10 to 20 seconds as within normal limits for frailer or older patients but worth monitoring, and 12 seconds or more as the commonly cited threshold associated with increased fall risk, with times well above 20 seconds indicating significant mobility impairment. This calculator returns the interpretation band for a measured time; it does not replace a clinical assessment.
