About this calculator

Calculating a tip is simple multiplication — the bill total times the tip percentage gives the tip amount, and adding that to the bill gives the total to pay — but tipping norms vary widely enough that "the right percentage" isn't universal: in the United States, 15–20% is the common range for restaurant service, while many other countries either build service into the price or consider a smaller gesture, like rounding up, sufficient.

Splitting the total evenly across a group is the other half of what this calculator handles, dividing the combined bill and tip by the number of people so everyone pays a fair, equal share without anyone doing the arithmetic at the table. This calculator takes the bill amount, tip percentage, and number of people to compute the tip, the total, and the per-person amount.
