About this calculator

Variability Index (VI) is Normalized Power divided by average power, part of the power-based training framework developed by Dr. Andrew Coggan. It measures how evenly power was distributed through a ride — a VI close to 1.0 means a steady, well-paced effort, while a higher VI means the ride was full of surges, attacks or coasting.

Cyclists and coaches read VI alongside Intensity Factor (Normalized Power divided by FTP) and Training Stress Score when reviewing a race file or workout: a flat time trial should produce a low VI, while criteriums and hilly road races naturally push it higher because of repeated accelerations.

This calculator takes your average power, Normalized Power and FTP, and returns your VI, Intensity Factor, TSS and a plain-language read on how well you paced the effort.
